Root planing, or deep cleaning, is one of the most effective non surgical procedures performed on patients. The procedure is done to remove calculus and plaque (live bacteria) from periodontal pockets, allowing the gums to heal. Root planing may eliminate or reduce the need for gum surgery, though surgical therapy may be required due to the severity of bone loss and gum disease.

The procedure is done by a registered dental hygienist with the use of local anesthetics, (i.e. Novocaine) and ultrasonic instrumentation. Generally the procedure is done over four visits, with a quarter of the mouth being treated at each visit. The appointments last between 1 and 1 1/2 hours each depending on the severity of the disease.

Patients can expect to be comfortable during the procedure. With the exception of slight cold sensitivity and tenderness, discomfort is rare following root planing. Patients can expect to return to work immediately after the appointment.
